Batdorf, Grant David was born on April 30, 1874 in at Lickdale, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of William and Amelia (Sattazahn) Batdorf.


Bachelor of Science, Pennsylvania State Normal School, Millersville, Pennsylvania, 1893. Graduate Bonebrake Theological Seminary, Dayton, O., 1898. Special student Lehigh University and University of Chicago.

Bachelor of Philosophy, Illinois Wesleyan University, 1902, Doctor of Philosophy., 1910. Doctor of Divinity, Otterbein College, 1921., Doctor of Laws, Lebanon Valley College, 1936.


Ordained ministry United Brethren in Christ Church, 1898. Pastor successively at Allentown, Harrisburg, Reading and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, until 1920, First Church, Dayton O. (the outstanding church in the denomination), 1920-1929. Elected bishop, May 14, 1929, and assigned to the East District Has received nearly 2,000 members into church fellowship and raised over $1,000,000 for church, educational and benevolent enterprises.

Special lecturer in department of preaching, Bonebrake Theological Seminary Trustee Bonebrake Theological Seminary (chairman of the executive committee. Business manager, January-July 1929). President Ministerial Pension Fund, Pa, State Council of Churches, Pennsylvania Anti-Saloon League, Quincy Orphanage and Home.

Chairman of the Board Christian Education of U.B. Church. Member Commision on Church Union. Member executive, Federal Council of Churches, also of commission on worship.
