Gregory Conniff earned a Bachelor of Arts in government (1966) from Columbia University in New York City and a Bachelor of Laws (1969) from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He did postgraduate study at Montclair State Teachers College in New Jersey (1969), an independent apprenticeship with William Weege at Jones Road Print Shop in Barneveld, Wisconsin (1971), and studied typography and book design with Walter Hamady at the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Art, Madison (1977).
Gregory Conniff worked as a self-employed photographer, he practiced law from 1972 to 1978. He was a VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) volunteer with Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1969-1970.
