Gregory Afia was born in Uyo, Nigeria; son of Peter Asuquo and Philomena Peter (Okon) Akpan.

Gregory studied at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Nigeria. In 1977 he became a Bachelor of Science in Botany with honors. In two year he was a student of the University of Jos in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He received a degree of the Master of Science in Botany.
In 1981 Gregory studied at the University Of Jos in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He received a post-graduate diploma in education. In eight years he received a degree of the Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics at the University of Calabar, Nigeria.
Gregory worked as a demonstrator at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Nigeria from 1976 to 1977. In this year he became a science teacher at the Teacher's College in Gombe, Nigeria. He worked there for a year. In 1978 he became a demonstrator of the University of Jos in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. he held this position for a year.
From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a lecturer at the College of education in Uyo, Nigeria. Since 1983 he worked at the University of Cross River in Uyo, Nigeria. he worked there until 1990. In six years he was a senior lecturer at the University of Uyo, Nigeria.
From 1991 to 1992 Gregory was an acting head at the department of botany, horticulture, and microbiology. In three years he became a coordinator science of the laboratory of technical programme. He worked there until 2000. In 1991 Gregory worked as a consultant in the area of wood and wood products and raw materials at the Research and Development Council in Uyo, Nigeria. In this year he became a senior consultant in the vegetation of the Zest Nigeria Ltd. in Lagos, Nigeria. Since 2000 he worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Calabar.
Gregory married to Margaret Bassey Otudor on March 27, 1982. Children: Idorenyin, Abasiono, Ubong.
