Pupil of N. Miaskovskii.
In 1918, his family moved to eastern Armenia. Early musical training at the Military Musicians’ Boarding School of Erevan. At the Moscow Conservatory (in the wind instrument department), 1927.
Accepted into the composition class, 1930. On graduating in 1935, directed a course for amateur composers in the Union of Composers. Returned to Armenia in 1936.
Taught at a music school. Concurrently musical director at the Drama Theatre. Taught in Erevan from 1938 and during World War II. Professor of classical composition from 1959.
Director of the conservatory, 1954-1960. Exponent of the ornamental variety of Armenian music. Wrote ballads, symphonies, music for films, etc.
