Studied music at the Music Drama School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Studied music at the Music Drama School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society.
Noticed by Sergei Kusevitskii, and became his pupil. Attracted to the balalaika, domra and other folk instruments. Became a domra virtuoso and learned how to make the instruments.
Involved in revolutionary activity. Several arrests and exile in Siberia. Created with S. Burov the 4-string domra.
In 1913, organized the Domra Quartet. In 1919, head of the 1st State Orchestra of Ancient Folk Instruments.
