As a medical student took an immediate interest in neuropathology. In his second grade performed first independent experimental work under Professor V.Ye. Gliki in Chair of Physiology.
1883 and 1884 wrote new research works. From 1884, after graduate, intern at A.Ya. Kozhevnikov’s Clinic of Nervous Diseases, Moscow University.
1887 defended doctor’s thesis on “Eksperimental’noye issledovaniye po voprosu o putyakh, provodyashchikh chuvstvitel’nost’ i dvizheniye v spinnom mozgu’’ (An Experimental Study of the Paths Conducting Sensitivity and Movement in the Spinal Cord). From 1889 associate professor From 1890 headed small Clinic of Nervous Diseases, Ostroumov’s Clinic of Internal Diseases.
1911 resigned from Moscow University along with other professor in protest against policies of Education Minister Kasso. 1911 financed and founded in Moscow Institute of Child Neurology and Psychology. Direxted this Institute until 1917, when he donated it to Moscow University.
1917 elected professor, Chair or Nervous Diseases, 1st Moscow University and became director of clinic and Kozhevnikov Neurological Institute. Specialized in anatomy, physiology, and clinical aspects of nervous system, experimental psychology and child defectology. First to trace course of Gower’s column toward the cerebrum.
First to describe circulatory zones in the afterbrain. Described finger reflex, now known as Rossolimo reflex. Also described anal and vulvo-anal reflexes.
Described syndrome of dissociated sensitivity disturbances with injuries of the spinal column. Invented new methods of preparing microscopic slides. Proposed surgico-toxic method of studying brain functions.
Contributed to diagnosis of brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and chorea. Invented individual dynamometer, a clonograph for registering hyperkinesis. One of first neuropathologists to use surgical methods of treatment, based on topical diagnosis.
Also one of first to begin using lumbar puncture. Laid groundwork for study of child inferiority and collected a mass of data on this subject. Founded first European clinic for treatment of nervous diseases in children.
After 1917 October Revol worked for People's Commissariat of Education, People's Commissariat of Health, People's Commissariat of Labor, Revol Military Council and Red Army’s Main Military Health Board. Company-founder and Honorary member, Moscow Social of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists. Also member, Rome and Paris Academy, Academy of Philadelphia and German Social of Neuropathologists.
Honorary member, Est Neurological Social. Member, Pedagogical Social, Psychological Social, Social of Experimental Psychology and Social of Amateur Anthropologists and Ethnographists. Consultant, People's Commissariat of Health.
Chairman, Commission for the Study of Lethargic Encephalitis. Member, Learned Medical Council. Consultant, Centr Institute for the Study of Occupational Diseases.
1926 Presidium member, International Psychotechnics Bureau. Won recognition of Russian as a national language of the International Association of Psychology and Psychotechnics Specialists, on a par with German, French and English. Company-founder, “Zhurnal nevropatologii i psikhiatrii im.
South.S. Korsakova”; edited this journal until his death in 1928. Editor, neuropathology and psychiatry sections in 1st ed, “Biomedical Engineering” (Large Medical Encyclopedia). 1960 Moscow street named for him.
