Grigoriy Grigorievich Gay was born on October 9, 1868, Kherson, Khersons'ka Oblast', Ukraine inHe was born in the family of the famous playwright Grigory Nikolaevich Gay. He spent his childhood with his mother in France and Switzerland during 1870-1877.
Grigoriy Grigorievich graduated from the Richelieu Gymnasium, then came to Saint Petersburg, where, on the advice of the Russian artist Repin, entered the Korovyakov Theater School.
After graduating from the Korovyakov Theater School (1888), Grigoriy Grigorievich served in the school theater, then played in many provincial troupes (Saratov, Astrakhan, Vilna, Voronezh, Kharkiv, etc.).
