Grigoriy Nikolaevich spent his childhood in the Kiev province. After graduating from the 2nd Kiev Gymnasium (1840-1846), he studied in Saint Petersburg at the school of guards sub-ensigns and cavalry cadets. In 1849, he was released as a cornet to the Grodno Hussar Regiment.
From 1854, Grigoriy Nikolaevich was attached to the school of guards sub-commissioned officers and cavalry cadets as a squadron officer. He was known as an expert on horses, and in 1856 he made his debut in the book Dressage of a riding horse. Having inherited the estate after his father's death (1855), Grigoriy Nikolaevich released his serfs.
In 1856, he retired with the rank of staff captain. After a reform in 1861 Grigoriy Nikolaevich was the peace mediator in Podolskiy province. Working in Duma, he spoke about "the need for a petition to introduce a Constitution in Russia" (1884), and was considered "extremely unreliable in political terms".
