ERNESAKS, Gustav was born in 1908 in village Perila, now Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic.
Studied at the Tallinn Conservatory while still at high school. Studied at the Tallinn Conservatory while still at high school. Graduated in 1931. Pupil of A. Kapp, 1931-1934.
Further studies at the same Conservatory. Taught singing in schools and conducted choirs from 1931. His first compositions date from that time.
Taught at the Pedagogical Department of the Tallinn Conservatory, 1937-1941. During World War II, directed the Iaroslavl’ Ensemble and
founded the Estonian Professional Choir Collective. After the war, Director of the Faculty of Choral Conducting at the Tallinn Conservatory.
In 1944, founder, chief conductor and artistic director of the male voice choir of the Tallinn Philharmony (now the State Male Voice Choir of the Estonian SSR). Wrote mainly operatic and choral music.
