Gustav ERNESAKS, USSR Composer. Conductor; Professor, and Director, Chair for Choral Conducting, Tallinn State Conservatory, since 1946; Popular Artist of USSR since 1956 and of Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic since 1954; Honoured Art Worker of Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic since 1954; board member, USSR Union of Composers, since 1957; board member, Estonia Union of Composers, since 1941.

Background

ERNESAKS, Gustav was born in 1908 in village Perila, now Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Education

1931 graduated Pedagogical Department, and 1934 graduated composition class, Tallinn Conservatory.

Career

1953 member, Estonia Committee the Defense of Peace. 1941-1953, Deputy Chairman, Estonia Union of Composers. Deputy, Estonia Supreme Soviet of 1955 convocation.

Member, Choristers’ Association, and Estonia Academy Society of Composers. One of organizers and permanent conductors of massed choirs with up to 25,000-35,000 singers which perform annually at traditional song festivals in Estonia.
