Gustave Buchet was born on June 5, 1888, in Etoy, Switzerland, into the family of Augustus, teacher and founder in 1872 of the asylum L'Espérance in Etoy, and Eugénie Goetz.
After completing studies in Geneva, Gustave moved to Paris in 1916 where he studied at the modernist workshop La Grande Chaumiere.
Gustave Buchet traveled to Paris, in 1910 with Rodolphe Théophile Bosshard. He founded in 1915, with Maurice Barraud, the group of Falot, which affirmed, in front of Hodler, the attachment of the young artists to the school of Paris. He stayed in Paris during 1916 - 1917, adhered to Futurism, then participated in the outbreak of Dada in Geneva in 1919 - 1920. From 1920 to 1939, he focused his entire career in Paris and no longer exhibited in Switzerland.
Gustave's activity was diversified: illustration, stage projects and theater costumes, sculptural paintings, and fashion house. He was close to the art of Fernand Léger and the purism of Le Corbusier. He enjoyed first success during personal exhibitions in Paris in 1926 and 1929. From 1932, he returned to a more traditional figuration, especially in his nudes. Established in Lausanne in 1939, he participated in the creation of the first Salon de printemps in 1941 and the production of the decorations of the Zurich cabaret Au Coup de Soleil in 1942.
Gustave Buchet had an order from Lausanne for the fire station in 1954 (two mosaics) and had a retrospective at the Lausanne Museum of Fine Arts in 1958. The artist died on July 16, 1963 in Lausanne, Switzerland. His avant-garde work would only really be rediscovered during a posthumous exhibition in 1963, then by the Zurich market in the 1970s.
