Hachibe Oku was a purveyor of fish to the Imperial Household in Kyoto by family occupation. Learning that Emperor Gokomyo was against cremation as a cruel practice, he dissuaded courtiers from cremating the remains of above Emperor. After that, the Imperial Household abolished cremation of Imperial remains.
