Background
Torataro was born on May 22, 1837. He was born into the family of the village headman of Kitakawa village, in Takaoka district, Tosa province (now Kōchi Prefecture, Japan).

Torataro was born on May 22, 1837. He was born into the family of the village headman of Kitakawa village, in Takaoka district, Tosa province (now Kōchi Prefecture, Japan).
Toratarō Yoshimura studied swordsmanship under Takechi Hanpeita Zuizan.
While still young succeeded his father as village headman, but dissatisfied with the job Toratarō Yoshimura resigned to study under Tetsuma Mazaki. Later he conspired with Kuniomi Hirano and others at Kyoto to raise an army for the Imperial cause, but the plot came to light and he was arrested and thrown into prison at Tosa (1862).
After his release he again returned to Kyoto and raised a volunteer army with Tesseki Fujimoto and others and opened war. His volunteer force was soon wiped out and he killed himself.
