Hadley began his career as a partner in the law firm of Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts, in New York City. He was also the director and vice-president ot several power companies, including American Superpower Corporation, the Niagara Hudson Power Corporation, and the Commonwealth and South Corporation.
Hadley also authored several books. His first book was The United States: Guardian of Atomic Weapons (1947), followed by A Free Order: National Goal and World Goal (1963).
