Worked in Moscow and Petersburg theatres as a conductor. Moved to Germany where he taught in the Koblenz, Berlin and Strasburg conservatories until 1918. Professor of composition at the Academy of Arts, Berlin, 1920-1929.
Professor at the Music Academy, Munich, 1930-1934. According to Soviet sources, his music was little performed outside Germany. Cooperated with the Nazi music authorities during the 1930s.
He detested modernism and modernists in music.
