Hanzo Kanaya had a distinguished military career: staff officer attached to General Oku during Russo-Japanese War (1904), military attache at Japanese Embassy, Berlin, Commander of Japanese Army at China and at Korea, Vice-Chief of Staff and Head of Military Staff College concurrently. He promoted General (1928), Chief of General Staff (1930) and Military Councillor (1931).
