Mccann received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bates College in 1937. Ten years later he earned his Master of Science degree from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.
Mccann began her career as an analytical and research chemist at General Chemical division of Allied Chemical Company in New York City and held it from 1937 to 1950. In 1950, he was appointed Principal investigator at National Institute of Dental Research and National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and held it for nine years.
Then in 1959 Harold became the chief of microanalytical laboratory at National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases. From 1963 to 1969 he was a member of staff at Forsyth Dental Center in Boston.
Mccann was a member of International Association for Dental Research, American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science.
On July 16, 1938 Harold Mccann married Virgilyn Richards Mayo. They had 3 children.
