Booth was born on January 30, 1891 in Cleveland, United States; the son of Edwin Booth and Lydia Ackley (Simmons) Booth.
Booth received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1915. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1919 from Cornell University.
Booth began his career as an instructor of chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in 1919. Five years later he took a position of an assistant professor and associate professor in 1930 at the same university. Then in 1937, Harold became a professor at Case Western Reserve University.
Booth was a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Chemical Society.
On December 31, 1917 Harold Booth married Hazel Lavinia Anthony. They had three children.
