(The Third Edition of Der Anfang provides systematic train...)
The Third Edition of Der Anfang provides systematic training in the four language skills within a cultural framework. All forms and structures are introduced in a cultural setting; opportunity for the practice of sounds is provided throughout the text in a cultural context offered by German proverbial, epigrammatic, and aphoristic expressions. Imitation drill in Der Anfang, Third Edition, is limited to that provided by repetition of examples. Mutation drills and exercises requiring creative effort are carefully structured to give maximum practice in forming correct habits of using German. Beginning in Lesson Thirteen, students are to form sentences without models other than those found in the dialogs and discourses. This practice should help students to express themselves with a degreed of simplicity that is representative of given stages in the text. Each review lesion provides supplementary drills on the forms and structures in each third of the book. The review exercises presuppose knowledge of all words and phrases listed under "Wörter and Wendungen" in the portion of the text being reviewed. The "Wörter und Wendungen" used in the varied drills represent the lexical portion of the text that is to be used actively. Harold von Hofe (1912-2011) was Professor Emeritus of German and former director of the Feuchtwanger Institute for Exile Studies at the University of Southern California. After earning a bachelor's degree from New York University in 1939 and a doctorate from Northwestern University von Hofe relocated to Los Angeles and took a job teaching German at USC. He became a professor and served as chair of USC's German Department from 1945 to 1956 (as well as from 1963 to 1968 and from 1971 to 1974). Von Hofe's scholarly work focused largely on the work of writers who fled Germany for Southern California during the Holocaust.
