Wright was born on October 6, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; the son of Sydney L. Wright and Catharine W. (Morris) Wright.
Wright received a Bachelor of Arts degreein 1950 and a Master of Arts degree in 1953 from Harvard University. Also in 1957, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Harvard University.
Wright began his career as a teaching fellow at Harvard University in 1955. Since 1957 he has been a member of faculty at Swarthmore College. In 1968, Harrison was appointed a professor of history at the same college and held it for nineteen years.
In 1968, he took a position of a chairman of the department at Swarthmore College. Then in 1979, Wright became a provost at that college, where he worked until 1984. In 1982, he was an acting president at Swarthmore College. Also he served as Isaac H. Clothier professor of history and international relations at Swarthmore College from 1987 to 1993. Since 1993 Harrison has been a Clothier professor and provost emeritus at the same college.
Morris is a member of Jamestown History Society, History Society of Pennsylvania, Sailing Institute, Humanities Forum Rhode Island, Newport History Society and Phi Beta Kappa.
On July 20, 1957 Harrison Morris married Josephine Stearns Cole. They have 5 children.
