Harry Adams was born on October 13, 1924, in Stanford, Kentucky.
Adams graduated from Yale College in 1947 and Yale Divinity School in 1951.
After graduation from Yale Divinity School Harry Adams stayed there to serve in various academic capacities beginning in 1956. He was the Associate Director of Field Work from 1956 to 1960, and the Associate Dean of the Divinity School from 1960 to 1976. He last served as the Associate Dean of the Divinity School from 1965 to 1986, before serving as chaplain. While Chaplain, Adams was the Master of Trumbull College from 1987 to 1997, and later served as the acting Master of Saybrook from 1998 to 1999. In 1999 he was appointed the Horace Bushnell Professor of Christian Nurture.
