“Get down from there!” Dr. Hank Whipple looked over his shoulder at a dark form who was shouting an alarm below him. The doctor was caught on a thick limb, sticking his neck out to see inside the House of Horrors—that eerie, old, isolated, 2-story building with no outside entrances. “Put him away. Ice him somewhere, anywhere. And keep him away.” The president of Masson Industries leaned down, put his arm around his vice-president, and whispered the name of the person to be taken out. “Professor Hicks is dead. They want an autopsy.”

(How can you see the bright side of failing when you hear ...)
How can you see the bright side of failing when you hear words like these? "Go! Get out of my sight!" from an uncle. "You've been a disappointment to me," from a teacher. "I have to think of myself first," from a best friend. "How could you be so dumb?" from an irate fellow doctor. Reflecting on his pop's arrival to America from Armenia, Dr. Harry Chinchinian writes: "I must have inherited some of his stubbornness because I also kept on trying, kept running like mad to achieve, in spite of failing . . . . That's why when all is said and done, just look at how, in this crazy, wonderful life, you can fail and fail and fail and still win." Here are more stories of the immigrant Armenian kid, with no means and no background, who remembers with pleasure the kindly spirits that smoothed his path, describing predicaments while working in his uncle's grocery store in Troy, New York; camping with the precocious gang leader Antranik;traveling Europe during and after WW II; and attending medical school to become a pathologist. Over 70 illustrations.

(“Someone had shot his horse! Not only was Crummy shot, b...)
“Someone had shot his horse! Not only was Crummy shot, but he was wounded very badly. There he lay, sprawled on the edge of the cliff, gasping and staring up at Hank. He inspected the wound. It was through his chest, through his lungs, and Lord knew where else the slug had tumbled, tearing up cartilage, bone, muscle, and many blood vessels. Large amounts of red blood oozed out of his mouth. Bright arterial blood. His breath made high-pitched wheezing sounds, which meant no air was going in or out. His horse was suffocating to death on his own blood. Hank could do nothing. He was useless to save him. Still he had to do something. So he pulled out the horse’s tongue and wiped away as much of the oozing blood as he could. Nothing changed. His horse was dying—his life fading before Hank’s eyes. It had to be a bad dream. Hunting season wasn’t open, so it couldn’t have been an accidental shot. Who would shoot a defenseless horse, one that was tied up at that?
