In 1945 he was elected to the House of Commons for Hythe, a seat he held until 1950 when the constituency was abolished, and then represented Folkestone and Hythe until 1959. Mackeson served under Winston Churchill as a Lord of the Treasury from 1951 to 1952 and as Secretary for Overseas Trade from 1952 to 1953. In 1954 he was created a Baronet, of Hythe in the County of Kent.
Mackeson married Alethea Cecil Chetwynd-Talbot, daughter of Reginald George Chetwynd-Talbot, in 1940.
