Harry Polkinhorn was born on March 3, 1945, in Calexico, California, United States, into the family of William and Virginia (Griswold) Polkinhorn.
In 1967 Harry received Bachelor of Arts at University of California in Berkeley. Then he studied at San Diego University, where he got Master of Arts in English in 1970 and Master of Arts in Art in 1982. In 1975 he earned Doctor of Philosophy at New York University.
Harry started his career as a poet, editor and translator. He started teaching English in Vermont to foreign students. In 1972 he moved to Manhattan with his wife, where he taught language to students from Harlem. Moving once again, Polkinhorn taught English in Zurich, in his wife’s home country of Switzerland for five years before returning to the United States.
But then he decided to change the direction of his career completely and took part in Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program after which he became a psychoanalytic. Currently, he maintains a private practice in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in University City. He is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 15 years’ experience treating individuals, couples, and children.
Dr. Polkinhorn is also Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University, where he was Director of SDSU Press. He is a permanent visiting professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil, and adjunct in Depth Psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute. He has published over 50 books of poetry, fiction, translation, and edited collections. His work has been translated into Russian, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages.
Harry Polkinhorn was married twice, to Christa Umiker and Armida Romero, but all that marriages ended in divorce. He has a daughter Cecilia Polkinhorn.
