(This short novel first appeared in an anthology released ...)
This short novel first appeared in an anthology released by Cemetery Dance publications. Kealan Patrick Burke edited. The main character was to have a brief encounter with a wise old man named Johnny Divine, who lived in a town called "Brimstone Turnpike," the title of the anthology. That character would then be given one object that would impact the outcome of the story. The writers were free to invent everything else.

Few of us see the shadow with any clarity. Turn around for a peek, it slips away. Our violent, sexually tinged fantasies are indulged regularly in darkened theaters, savored in eerie prose, celebrated in song, sometimes reluctantly encountered within the depths of a reoccurring nightmare. When we do look hard at one, long enough to recognize it as our own, the experience can challenge reality. We can then choose to become wiser as a result or spin totally out of control.

(For generations raised on the Saturday afternoon thrills ...)
For generations raised on the Saturday afternoon thrills of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, the appearance of the so-called "psychological westerns" of the Forties, Fifties and Sixties came as a surprise. And, to some who didn't care for them, a shock. With such films as Blood On The Moon, Winchester `73, and The Naked Spur, audiences saw characters very much like themselves emotionally. Critics argued the authenticity of some of the history in these films but there was no denying their power.
