Career
In 1945, he was appointed assistant professor at University College Nottingham. He was a researcher at Microbiological Research Establishment at Porton Down. From 1965 to 1988, he was Chair of Microbiology at the University of Birmingham, subsequently becoming Emeritus Professor.
