Hazel Holt was born on September 3, 1928, in Birmingham, United Kingdom. She was a daughter of Charles Douglas Young, an advertising manager, and Roma Young (maiden name Simpson).
Hazel Holt did her studies at King Edward VI High School for Girls in Birmingham. Then, she pursued her training at Newnham College, the University of Cambridge where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in 1950.
The start of Hazel Holt’s career can be counted from 1950 when she joined the staff of the International African Institute in London. While serving there as an editor, she met a writer Barbara Pym who became her lifelong friend.
In 1974, Holt left her post and a year later moved to the Stage and Television Today newspaper (currently The Stage) where she had served as a reviewer and feature writer for the following five years.
Four years after Pym’s death, in 1984, ‘A Very Private Eye: An Autobiography in Diaries and Letters’, initiated by the novelist’s daughter, Hilary Pym, and co-edited by Holt, was issued.
Five years later, Hazel Holt published her first own work, fiction in the mystery genre ‘Mrs. Malory Investigates’. The story marked the start of Holt’s career as a writer. In a couple of years, Hazel Holt came back again to the biography of her beloved friend Barbara Pym, this time as an author herself. Her ‘A Lot to Ask: A Life of Barbara Pym’ was appreciated both by critics and Pym’s admirers for the richness of the materials on the novelist’s life.
The first volume about Mrs. Malory issued in 1989 was followed the next two decades by another twenty parts about the amateur detective.
