(The aim of this book is to provide an economically based ...)
The aim of this book is to provide an economically based analysis of organizations. It provides a broad overview of economic approaches to orgainzations, and illustrates the application of these approaches to organizational problems. broadly speaking, technical expositions are omitted in favour of discussions of the basic concepts involved. The book starts by comparing organizations and markets, and explores the ways inwhich they affect each other's structure and performance. The book also provides an introduction to five diffent economic approaches to organizations: behavioural theory; agency theory; transaction-cost economics; the economic theory of strategic management; and the evolutionary approach to organizations.

Economic Approaches to Organizations, 2nd edition assumes no previous knowledge of economics but introduces the student of organization and management to the use of economics in this area. The text explains and compares, in a non-technical way, the behavioural theory of the firm, agency theory, transaction cost economics, and recent economic contributions to strategic management and evolutionary theory. It might easily be used as a companion volume to a text on organizations or strategic management. Instructor's Manual (0-13-080464-9).
