Kawakatsu, Heita was born on August 16, 1948 in Kyoto, Japan.


Bachelor in Economics, Waseda University, Tokyo, 1972. Master of Arts in Economic History, Waseda University, Tokyo, 1975. Doctor of Philisophy in Modern History, Oxford University, United Kingdom.


Junior research fellow Waseda University, 1975-1982, lecturer, 1982-1985, associate professor, 1985-1990, vice director library, 1990-1994, professor, 1990-1998. Research professor International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto, since 1998. Guest professor National Ethnological Museum, Osaka, 1993-1995, Center Southeast Asian Studies Kyoto University, 1993-1995.
