Sturm was born in Furth in Wald, Germany, on February 21, 1932.
Helmut Sturm passed the entrance exam in art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1952. There he became Erich Glette's master-pupil in 1953. He graduated from the academy in 1958.
Sturm became a co-founder of Gruppe SPUR, which existed from 1957 to 1965. Among other members were Heimrad Prem, Lothar Fischer and Hans-Peter Zimmer. In 1958 the first SPUR manifesto and the SPUR graphic portfolio with 12 etchings by the artists and texts by Asger Jorn, Hans Platschek and Conrad Westphal came out.
Between 1959 and 1962 the group was a member of Situationist International (SI). Helmut Sturm took part in the SPUR exhibition in Galerie van de Loo. He collaborated with Jørgen Nash, Constant, Giuseppe Pinot-Gallizio, Hans Platschek, Asger Jorn, Maurice Wyckaert, and Guy Debord. In 1961 he stayed at Oerkelljunga, Sweden with Zimmer, Prem, and Dieter Kunzelmann.
In 1962 the group published the SPUR-book, in which the SPUR magazines 1-7 were printed. That same year a lawsuit began at the local court in Munich; Helmut Sturm, Heimrad Prem and Dieter Kunzelmann were accused of spreading indecent scripts and abuse of religions. As a result, the SPUR group was expelled from the Situationist International.
Members of Gruppe SPUR continued to do collaborative work, linking up with Wir in 1966, forming Geflecht, which was cancelled during the student riots in 1968. Around this time, Sturm had his first solo exhibition in the Galerie van de Loo, Munich.
In 1970 Helmut Sturm became a co-founder of the Child Forum with Galerie van de Loo in Munich, where he worked as an Art educator for ten years. In 1975 he set up the Kollektiv Herzogstrasse in cooperation with Prem. From 1980 till 1982 he worked as a guest professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1985 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, holding the post until 1998.
