Hendrik Meerten was born in 1961. His later education and legal career developed in the Netherlands, where he studied at a historic university and entered the legal profession.
Meerten studied at Leyden University, the institution now called Leiden University, and completed his studies in 1986. Founded in 1575 by William I of Orange, Leiden was established as a Protestant institution intended to educate citizens of the northern Netherlands for church and government service. Over the following centuries it became a center of Dutch Reformed theology, science, and medicine, and it remains the oldest university in the Netherlands.
His admission to the Dutch bar in 1987 followed his university years and marked his entry into legal practice.
Following his admission to the bar in the Netherlands in 1987, Meerten worked as a partner at Resident Associates. Admission to the bar in the Netherlands qualifies a lawyer to practise law there.
