Henri Joannes Maria Claessen

Background

Claessen, Henri Joannes Maria was born on November 30, 1930 in Wormerveer, The Netherlands. Son of Franciscus Josephus Claessen and Maria Henrietta Lambour.

Education

In 1950-1956 he studied geography, history and anthropology at the University of Amsterdam.

Career

In 1956-1970 he taught geography and history at St. Adelbert's College in Wassenaar. 1970–1994 lecturer in social anthropology (since 1984 professor) at Leiden University, 1989–1991 dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Achievements

• In 1983–1093 he was vice-president, since 1998 an honorary life member of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences.
