(Excerpt from Henry Anson Buttz, His Book, Vol. 2: Lecture...)
Excerpt from Henry Anson Buttz, His Book, Vol. 2: Lectures, Essays, Sermons, Exegetical Notes; Parts III and IV This Epistle was written from Ephesus, near the close of Paul's three years' residence in that city, in answer to questions which had been addressed to him on important matters which had greatly disturbed the church in Corinth. But the most important question was that con cerning the resurrection. Paul's reply is found in this chapter. If all the rest of this Epistle were lost, this chapter alone, which has sustained the faith and comforted and cheered the people of God through all the Christian centuries, would remain as a proof of Paul's matchless genius and of his divine inspiration. Henry Anson Buttz was born on April 18, 1835 at Middle Smithfield, Pennsylvania.
Henry attended the village school there and at fifteen taught a district school. Then there followed alternate periods of attending school and teaching, until 1858, when he was graduated from Princeton University. His theological studies were pursued in the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church at New Brunswick, New Jersey.
His ecclesiastical affiliations were with the Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he served as pastor of several churches during the ten years of his public ministry, before being called to the work of the newly opened Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey, to which he gave a most fruitful half-century of distinguished service.
He was adjunct professor of Greek and Hebrew 1868-70; professor of Greek and New Testament Exegesis 1871-1918; president of the faculty 1880-1912, and president emeritus 1912-20.
While primarily not an administrator, his tastes and training being along other lines, his presidency was a notable one, for when he resigned in 1912 every new building on the campus, six in all, had been secured by him, and practically the entire endowment had been built up through his efforts. Nearly three thousand students of almost every nationality had come under his influence.
It was said of him that he was Drew Theological Seminary. In this he lived and moved and had his being. No other opportunity appealed to him. He declined an election to the editorship of the Methodist Review. He was indifferent to a possible election to the bishopric of the Church.
Various works were edited by him: Epistle to the Romans in Greek (1876); The New Life Dawning (1873), by B. H. Nadal; and The Student's Commentary--The Book of Psalms (1896), by Dr. James Strong.
Although he resigned the presidency to a younger generation in 1912, Buttz continued as professor until 1918.

In his religious affiliation Henry Anson Buttz was Methodist, so he preached at the Morristown Methodist church until he came to Drew in 1868.
Never dogmatic, even though a man of strong convictions, he was urbane without obsequiousness, gentle without effeminacy, and, when necessary, firm without harshness.
Essentially a teacher, a scholarly, ardent, interpretative teacher of the Greek New Testament, he was himself an example of the interest he sought to awaken in others.
He was a member of various societies such as the American Exegetical Society and the American Philological Association, and of several ecclesiastical organizations, but his voice was seldom heard in debate.
Buttz was married, on April 11, 1860, to Emily Hoagland.
