He was educated at schools in Elmira and New York City. Having decided to become an architect, he took a special course of study at Cornell University, and supplemented his training during a year of travel and study in Europe.
In architectural practice Mr. Chapman maintained an office for many years at 334 Fifth Avenue, engaged in designing many and varied types of buildings. Among his most important works in New York were Rutgers Presbyterian Church; the Broadway Tabernacle; Union Sulphur Building at Rector and West Streets; the U. S. Mortgage & Trust Co. at 73rd St. and Broadway, and another building for the Company at W. 74th and Madison Avenue. He was also architect of the Public Library at Troy, N. Y., and the First National Bank at Greensburg, Pa.
