(Excerpt from Calmire: Man and Nature "This is outrageous...)
Excerpt from Calmire: Man and Nature "This is outrageous! He has rung four times already!" "Let him go in. The door is open." "No! He had better stay within reach of the horses. I'll go and see what it means myself. Let me out, please." "Let Marie go." "No; I'll go myself." And she got out. It was Nina Wahring, one Summer evening not far from 1880, when she and her mother, with their maid, reached Fleuvemont. Till within a few weeks, the house had been closed for two years - since Mr. Calmire had gone abroad immediately after his wife's death. Now he was back in New York, where he had found his cousin (by marriage) and life-long friend, Mrs. Hugh Wahring, in town later than her wont, and in a predicament. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. A VILLA SYMPOSIUM. The next morning, the two fiiends went to Fleuvemont, Mr. Legrand Calmire's home tor most of the year. Some critics of the book where the place made its first humble appearance in literature, said it was on the Hudson, but the author never did. It and its residents having, however, already been described in print, need not be again described in the present narrative, except as incidentally necessary. Mr. Calmire's yearning to have Nina for its chatelaine had been gratified, though not in the way he had more than once desired. Yet in summers she generally spent weeks there, with Muriel and their four children, the eldest of whom was a startling image ot his father, and, perhaps for that reason, received, as some people thought, more minute care from Mrs. Muriel than did the others. Perhaps, though, some of the peculiar interest was to be accounted for by the fact that he was a boy, while the others (except the baby, who, of course, was king anyhow) were girls. Be that as it may, when Carl saw the nest of them, with their mother awaiting his coming, he invoked the spirits of Botticelli and Raphael and dear old Gian Bellini and Greuze, and God knows how many more, to do them all justice; but when Nina held out the baby to "kiss 'Cousin' Carl," he felt a pang that went nigh to break his heart. Mortal man could not be wholly miserable, though, in such a home, surrounded by such appreciation and love. Calmire received him as a son, and Nina as a brother, kissing him and, a minute later, after she had stood looking at him and the others, exclaiming: "O, such men as you are!" and trying to put her arms around all three of them at once; and as the men were laughing and squeezing together, sha sr-id: "If Fritz were here, I'd get him i...
