Schogt, Henry Gilius was born on May 24, 1927 in Amsterdam. Son of Johannes Herman and Ida Jacoba (Van Rijn) Schogt.
Schogt went to school in the Netherlands. He studied Russian and French at the University of Amsterdam and received his B.A. and M.A.
Schogt earned his Ph.D. in French with the thesis "Les causes of the double issue of the fermé tonique libre en français" from the University of Utrecht in 1960.
