Excerpt from St. Patrick at Tara: A Forest Play Play, or to defend in a work, which is avowedly imaginative, though based on historical sources and deductions, my views on early Irish civilization and religion. The antiquity of the legends of St. Patrick, such as those of the lighting of the Paschal fire on the Beltane feast, of the contest with the druids and of the raising of the ghost of Cuchulainn, is very great, and they are characteristic of the cen turies of the spread of Christianity, in which they arose. The dif ficulties, which St. Patrick is represented as meeting and the way in which he met them, can be illustrated from the lives of many missionaries. The story of the spread of Christianity under the wing of Rome is the most important subject in the history of modem civilization, and I make no apology in dealing with it in a serious vein at a gathering of the flower of the most modern and most recently founded civilization in the world, that of California. The Story of the Nations: Portugal by H. Morse Stephens THIS volume is written on a different plan to that adopted in most of the volumes in the same Series which have preceded it, and attempts to give a short chronological history of Portugal. An episodical history, though more interesting than a consecutive narrative, in that it treats only of the most striking events, demands from the reader a groundwork of accurate knowledge. This is not given with regard to the history of Portugal in any book in the English language with which the author is acquainted. Dunham, who combined a history of Portugal with that of Spain, in five volumes published in Lardner’s Cabinet Cyclopædia between 1838 and 1843, based his account on Vertot’s Révolutions de Portugal, first printed at Paris in 1678, and modern English standard books of reference still make use of Dunham, and contain the old blunders of identifying Portugal with Lusitania, recognizing the fictitious Cortes of Lamego in 1143, regarding the victory of Ourique as a “prodigious” victory, &c., &c. Since the time of Dunham, a few books have been published in England bearing on special periods of Portuguese history, such as the lives of the Marquis of Pombal and the Duke of Saldanha, published by John Smith, Count of Carnota, and two volumes of a History of Portugal, by E. MacMurdo, and which is still in progress; but there exists no book containing a complete and trustworthy history to which students may be referred. Yet within the last fifty years the history of Portugal has been entirely rewritten. The modern school of historians, which derived its first impulsion from Niebuhr and Ranke, found a brilliant representative in Alexandra Herculano, who saw that history could only be written after a careful examination of contemporary documents, and who in his Historia de Portugal, published between 1848 and 1853, swept away much of the cobweb of legend which had enveloped the early history of his country. Herculano undoubtedly owed much to Heinrich Schäfer, who wrote the history of Portugal in the Geschichte der Europäischen Staaten edited by Heeren and Ukert; but he went much further than Schäfer, and the history of the latter is now quite out of date. The works of Herculano and his followers have quite superseded the histories of Lemos, Sousa Monteiro, and J. F. Pereira, which are mentioned here only as books to be avoided by the historical student.

Henry was born on October 3, 1857 in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, the son of John Edward Stephens, who belonged to an old army family and served as an army medical officer in India, and of Emma (Morris) Stephens, the daughter of John Carnac Morris, whose family was prominent in the Indian civil service.
He entered Haileybury College, near Hertford, in 1871, and Balliol College, Oxford, in 1877, and he obtained a first class in modern history in 1880 and a third in jurisprudence in 1881. He was admitted to the degree of B. A. in 1882.
In 1881 he was enrolled at Lincoln's Inn and later attended lectures at the universities of Bonn and Paris. For several years he was engaged in journalism, but historical studies were his prime interest, and when only twenty-eight years of age he published the first volume of his History of the French Revolution (1886), which established his reputation.
After assisting William Wilson Hunter, the historian of India, with several works, Stephens served from 1887 to 1890 as librarian of the Leeds library, of which he issued a printed catalogue.
After considerable earlier experience on the lecture platform, he served as a lecturer in the Oxford University extension system from 1890 to 1894. The extraordinary amount, scope, and high character of these scholarly contributions, produced in a little more than a dozen years after leaving Oxford, revealed his prodigious capacity for work and placed him in the front rank of historical scholarship in England.
He was chosen for the chair of modern European history at Cornell University, which he held from 1894 to 1902. In the latter year he accepted a call to the University of California as head of the department of history, where he remained until his death.
From 1902 to 1909 he was also director of university extension and, from 1917 to 1918, dean of the faculty of letters and science. His methods of teaching were developed from his experience as an extension lecturer. He customarily prepared extended printed syllabi for his courses to recite the facts that were admirably illuminated in his lectures.
As early as 1898 he devoted one of his courses to the history of British colonization. The heavy burdens of teaching, administration, and lecturing that he assumed in America hampered but did not stop his literary productivity. Only one of his several later publications, an essay on "History, " contributed to the volume Counsel upon the Reading of Books (1900), may be selected for special mention because it expounds his own position as an historian.
An illness in December 1916 seriously undermined his health but did not lessen his devotion to his work, and his death came without warning. He left his estate, including his book collections, to the University of California, where he is commemorated by a memorial hall which is the center of student activities.
Henry Morse Stephens was one of the principal contributors to the Dictionary of National Biography, he provided for its first twenty volumes (1885 - 89) more than two hundred articles, principally of military biography. Besides numerous other items he furnished for the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica the historical account of Portugal. He took an important part in founding the American Historical Review in 1895 and was a member of the board of editors during its first decade.

Unusual gifts for friendship, and inspiring encouragement of younger scholars were obvious parts of his character.
