He was articled to William Martin in Bretby, and was also a pupil of George Maddox. He started in independent practice in 1834 in Hartshorne, Derbyshire.
He moved to Derby in the late 1830s or early 1840s and was based at 16 Full Street in Derby. By 1847 he was at 49 Friargate, Derby.
In 1857 he is listed as living in Mackworth.
