Attended Franklin College (now U. Georgia), 1847-1849.
Wrote verses for Southern Literary Messenger, other periodicals. A founder Russell’s Magazine, 1857, contributor numerous works. Published small collection of poems, 1860.
Wrote Ethnogenesis, 1861, also war poems which stirred South and earned him title of laureate of the Confederacy, poems included A Cry to Arms, Carolina, Carmen Triumphale, Charleston.
Enlisted in Company B, 30th South Carolina. Regiment, 1862; joined Confederate Army of West as correspondent of Charleston Mercury, 1862.
Partial proprietor, associate editor South Carolinian, Columbia, South Carolina., 1864 until burning of Columbia, 1865. Completed Magnolia Cemetery Ode, 1866.
Known as one of ablest Southern poets of century.
