Education

Preparatory education, Sodus (New York) Academy. Graduate New York State Normal College, 1883, Auburn (New York) Theological Seminary, 1886, New York University, 1894. S.T.D., American University, Harriman, Tennessee, 1901.

Career

Teacher, 1873-1878; ordained ministry Presbyterian Church, 1886. Pastor Iron Mountain, Michigan, 1886-1891. Associate pastor with brother Charles H., Broome St. Tabernacle, New York City, 1891-1892.

Founded People’s Tabernacle, Inc. (inter-denominational), in a district of 60,000 people without church privileges (upper east side of New York City), and president, trustee, treasurer and pastor of same since 1892. Built Emeline York Tyndall Home for Business Women to give living at low cost, 1905.

Founded coöperative housing project for the poor, 1921, also founded a social and religious federation of Jews and Gentiles, 1935. Lecturer on cooperative housing.
