Until 1877 Henry Wright worked in the Auckland province of New Zealand as a storekeeper, mine manager, company secretary, and commercial agent, also serving as an accountant on the Auckland City Council. He moved to Wellington in 1877, working at several posts and becoming active in community affairs. The photographer was also a horticulturist and a pioneer in the meat-freezing industry.
Henry Wright co-founded the Wellington Employers Association in 1890 and was appointed landscape photographer to Lord Onslow during the latter's term of office, 1889-1892. He traveled widely in the North Island of New Zealand, making notable photos of the timber-trading ports of the far north as well as of the city and environs of Wellington. Of his work, 360 images survive.
