Liverpool Collegiate Institution, under Doctor How’son. Articled to an architect in Liverpool, where he subsequently practised for a time. At about the age of thirty took up residence in London.
In 1883 appointed editor of The Builder. Is an amateur musician and writer on music, and for many years musical critic to the Edinburgh Review. For several successive years gave classical organ recitals at the Albert Hall on Sunday afternoons during the London season.
Was a contributor to Grove’s Dictionary of Music, and author of many essays on artistic, musical, and literary subjects, more especially in the Edinburgh and Fortnightly Reviews.
Member of the Architectural Association, the Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club, and the Musical Association. F. Architect, and for nearly twenty years editor of The Builder.
Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Spouse 1887, Florence Elizabeth, y.daughter of W. Stephens Dicken, Deputy General Inspector of Hospitals in East India Company’s Service.
