Escaped from slavery, 1824. Went to school with other escaped slaves at Canaan, New Hampshire (U.S.) (school broken up by a mob, 1835). Became preacher and abolition agitator for American Anti-Slavery Society.

Delivered address before national convention of free people of color at Buffalo urging slaves to rise and slay their masters, 1843. Opposed in that convention by Frederick Douglass.
