Vail, Henry Hobart was born on May 27, 1839 in Pomfret, Vermont, United States. Son of Joshua and Harriet (Warren) Vail.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Middlebury College, 1860, Doctor of Laws, 1896.

Career

Taught school, Dayton, O., 1861. Sergeant Company C, 131st Ohio Infantry, summer of 1864 (100 days’ men). Entered service of Sargeant, Wilson, Hinkle & Company, educational publications, Cincinnati, 1866.

Admitted partner in successors, Wilson, Hinkle, & Company, 1874. Remained partner with successors, Van Antwerp, Bragg & Company, whose business was bought by American Book Company, 1890. Removed to New York; director and editor-in-chief, 1890-1907, vice president, 1904-1911, American Book Company In 1877 planned and directed preparation of Ray’s New Arithmetics, and in 1878 directed and edited preparation of McGuffey’s Revised Readers.

Also many other school books. Retired from business, 1911.
