Patrick James Nielsen Hayden was born on January 2, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan, United States. He is the son of James and Jeanette Hayden.
Nielsen Hayden started his career, being first active in science fiction fandom while living in Toronto in the early 1970s. He then continued working in Seattle, before moving to the New York area in the 1980s to work professionally in publishing. After moving to New York, he worked at Literary Guild as an editorial assistant in 1984, then at Chelsea House as an associate editor till 1987. He joined Tor Books in 1988 as an assistant and has worked there ever since. He currently holds the position of an editor and the Manager of Science Fiction there.
Nielsen Hayden is also a writer, teacher, and musician. He plays guitar and sings on occasion for the New York rock band Whisperado.
As an educator, Nielsen Hayden is one of the regular instructors at Viable Paradise and has also taught at U.S. Clarion Workshops.
Patrick Nielsen Hayden, called by Janice M. Eisen in the Washington Post Book World “one of the most literate and historically aware editors in science fiction,” is best known as the editor or co-editor of several original and reprint anthologies, including the Starlight series and the young adult anthologies New Magics and New Skies.
As an editor at Tor Books for over 25 years, he is also responsible for publishing the debut novels of many of the field's best writers, including Maureen F. McHugh, Susan Palwick, Cory Doctorow, Jo Walton, and John Scalzi.
