Admitted to Pennsylvania bar, 1806. Practiced in Carlisle, Somerset (both Pennsylvania), also Missouri and Louisiana, 1810-1814, Baltimore, 1814-1817. Contributor articles to Missouri Gazette.
Deputy attorney general, later district judge for Louisiana, member Maryland. Legislature, 1814-1817, 19-21, supported bill to admit Jews to public office. Secretary, translator for Florida Governor Andrew Jackson, 1821-1832, later became judge Florida Territory (removed by Jackson).
Member United States House of Representatives (Whig) from Pennsylvania, 26th Congress, October 13, 1840-1841. Member of commission that provided for Mexican Treaty, 1839. Retired to Tarentum, Pennsylvania, devoted rest of life to literary activities.
