Began practice at Boston. 1859; sergeant to captain, Company K, 11th Massachusetts Volumes, 1861-1864. Promoted Second lieutenant for brave conduct at Williamsburg, Virginia, May 5, 1862.

Twice wounded. United State Attorneys Montana Ty., 1869-1871. Reporter Supreme Court, Montana Ty., 1869-1875. District attorney 1st District Montana Ty., 1871-1873, 1884-1886.

The American Association For Justice Montana Ty., 1875-1880. Member Montana Territorial Legislature, 1881, 1883, 1887. Chief justice of territory.
