Inventor of processes for reducing aluminum and other metals, electric smelting, making alkali from feldspar, making caustic soda from common salt, making sulphuric acid, purifying water gas from poisonous carbonic oxide, making gas purifying agents, making formic aldehyde, disinfecting apparatus and disinfectants, a system of electric lighting, generating electricity from fuel, recording wireless telegrams, making cyanides, ammonia, alcohol, ketones, lithium salts, et cetera, having taken out more than 150 patents.
Discoverer, inventor and patentee of a process of making substances which are unstable at elevated temperatures, but which evolve heat upon their formation, such as sulphuric anhydride and sulphuric acid, and this process has economized and revolutionized the manufacture of these products.
Has also discovered what is believed to be two new chemical elements of non-metallic nature, found associated with sulphur, for which the names “Azureon” and “Vernon” have been suggested.
