Taught school in California, 1888-1892. Owned book and stationery store, Palo Alto, 1892-1907. Owner and editor Palo Alto Times (daily), 1898-1919.

Established “The Altrurian,” a magazine devoted to ethics, religion and industrial reform, 1911.

Director First National Bank. City clerk, Palo Alto, 1894-1904.

Councilman, 1908-1909. Member Board of Freeholders, 1909.

President Board of Trade, 1906-1907, Santa Clara Company Editorial Association, 1913-1914.

Inventor of the revolving bond fund for financing street paving adopted by San Francisco and other cities. Founder and owner Peninsula Newspaper Syndicate. Chief editorial writer San Francisco Journal, since 1920.
