(Excerpt from English Poems: Old English and Middle Englis...)
Excerpt from English Poems: Old English and Middle English Periods, 450-1550 This volume is the first in order, although the last to appear, in a series of four volumes of English Poems, in tended especially for use with college classes. The aim and method of the series as a whole have been set forth in the prefaces to the other volumes and need not be repeated here, the less because the present volume differs considerably from the rest. It cannot well be used separately, as the later volumes can, but derives its chief value from its connection with the series: for the thorough study of Old English and Middle English poetry it is quite inadequate, but in an introductory survey course in English literature it may serve a useful end. To increase the value of the book for this purpose, some specimens of the early drama are given. Although plays are elsewhere excluded from the series and some of those here included exceed the strict chrono logical limits of the period. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(This book is a companion volume to American Poems, and li...)
This book is a companion volume to American Poems, and like that is intended chiefly for use in schools and colleges. The selections from American prose of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are expected to supply all the reading in these periods that most classes will need; they have been chosen for their historical significance as well as their literary interest, and represent the various phases of American life in colonial and revolutionary times. The selections from the prose of the nineteenth century are limited to tales, essays, and orations by the greater writers, and stop with the end of the Civil War; this limitation of scope has made it possible to include ample material for classroom study and much for outside reading, in the chief authors, and in most cases to print complete works. It may be especially noted that the speeches by Calhoun, Webster, and Lincoln afford a basis for the study of American oratory in its prime, and at a great crisis in the history of the nation. The text follows with scrupulous care the text of the early editions. I have reproduced spelling, capitalization, punctuation, use of italics, etc., in the belief thatstudents should read even the older works as they originally appeared, thus becoming familiar with their flavor and atmosphere, and gaining a sense of the historical development of language and typographical usage. The interchange of i and and of uand vhas not been kept, however, because it is confusing to inexperienced readers; and obvious misprints, and a few eccentricities of punctuation and capitalization that obscured the thought, have been corrected. The explanatory notes are few and brief, dealing only with points of real difficulty to students of average intelligence. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, C

Bronson. NY.. Holt,1909 PEEFACE. THIS book has been made with a definite, practical object in view, which has set certain limits to it and determined its nature and method. It is intended for use with college classes in introductory courses in literature; and the chief purpose of it is to cultivate in the undergraduate a liking for goodE nglish prose, and to give him some knowledge of English thought as it has found expression in English essays of the last three hundred years, by putting into his hands a not too bulky collection of interesting texts by some of the greater essayists from Bacon to Stevenson. In selecting material, therefore, chief regard has been paid to intrinsic interest of thought and style, and entire essays or chapters have been given whenever that was possible; when it was not, only Guch extracts are presented as have a certain completeness in themselves. The title English Essays, which best indicates the nature of the collection as a whole, has been interpreted liberally, in order to include some interesting and valuable matter which is not strictly of the essay type. On the other hand, there has been no attempt to include all the good essayists since Bacon, for that would have swelled the volume unduly unless the selections were unduly short. It has not been a main object, either, to afford illustrations of the historical development of English prose style, although to a certain extent the book may be so used, and to increase its value in this respect specimens of English prose before Bacon have been added in the A ppendix. Walter Cochrane Bronson was born on August 17, 1862 in Roxbury, Massachussets, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Anne Hasseltine (Chaplin) Bronson. Both his father and grandfather, Asa C. Bronson, were Baptist ministers.
Walter Bronson prepared for college at the Putnam, Connecticut, high school, but poor health prevented him from entering college until he was twenty-one years old. He graduated from Brown with high honors in 1887, and spent the following year in the Harvard Divinity School.
Interest in literature caused him to abandon his youthful intention of entering the ministry, however, and from 1888 to 1890 he did graduate work at Cornell University.
After a brief period of working as a professor at De Pauw University (1890 - 92) Walter Bronson returned to Brown as associate professor of English literature, becoming full professor in 1905, and later head of the department.
At the age of sixty-five he voluntarily retired that he might have freedom for study and writing, but the following year death came to him while he was engaged in research work at Oxford, England.
His creative tendencies were restrained, however, by an acute critical sense, a liking for research, and his genius for teaching. He held it finer to teach great literature than to produce a middling sort.

(Bronson. NY.. Holt,1909 PEEFACE. THIS book has been made ...)
Walter Bronson never fell into academic ruts, was as appreciative of the new as of the ancient, and as he grew older his power increased rather than abated. His latest students were the most emphatic in praise of his stimulating force. By nature he was a poet, and his Class Day poem, "Modern Monks, " a plea for a broad intellectual life, had an excellence unusual in such productions.
Quotations: One hundred students at the University and about forty at the Womens College, later Pembroke College, enrolled in the course. Of these, Bronson was disappointed to observe, "The years experience has strongly confirmed our belief that such a course was much needed. We have found nine-tenths of the class quite untrained in habits of intelligent and appreciative reading. . .. Next year we shall make the instruction even more elementary and practical. "
Walter Bronson was a shy, modest man, happy among his books, but not lacking in practical wisdom, and endowed with a shrewd knowledge of human nature, a keen sense of humor, and a kindly, optimistic spirit, which made him a valued counselor, and an attractive personality in the lecture room.
Quotes from others about the person
The Dictionary of American Biography said of him: "His creative tendencies were restrained . .. by an acute critical sense, a liking for research, and his genius for teaching. He held it finer to teach great literature than to produce a middling sort. "
On August 17, 1905, Walter Bronson married Elsie Marion Straffin.
