Herbert studied at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany. Also, he learned photography from Andreas Feininger in 1929.
In the 1930s Herbert's work was published in such places as Verve, Arts et Metiers Graphiques, Photographie, Harper's Bazaar, Life, Look, Epoca and several German magazines. In 1935 List left his family coffeeimporting business.
Creating surrealist "metaphysical" photography and travel images in the 1930s, List concentrated on portraits of European artists in the 1940s and 1950s. Also, he specialized in photographing works of art.
Herbert was influenced by such Surrealist artists as Man Ray, De Chirico and Max Ernst.
